Entebbe, Uganda, September 25, 2024: Uganda Airlines has reached a significant milestone by launching scheduled services to Harare, Zimbabwe, and Lusaka, Zambia, which will enhance connectivity between East Africa and Southern Africa.
Hon. Matia Kasaija, Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, graced the occasion, praising Uganda Airlines’ resilience. “We are famous for starting businesses, but we are also known for the highest infant mortality rate, with few startups surviving beyond one year after birth. It is gratifying that we are talking not just about one or two years of Uganda Airlines but five and still growing.”
Kasaija emphasised the strategic importance of the national carrier. “Air travel bridges distances and is even more important in Africa, where alternative means of transport to connect the continent are lacking.”
He highlighted the historical significance of Zambia and Zimbabwe, noting their role in Africa’s struggle for independence and visa-free policies for Ugandans. “Zambia and Zimbabwe hold special significance to Uganda… They are some of the few countries that, right from their independence, have maintained visa-free access for Ugandans and vice versa.”
However, Kasaija acknowledged the untapped trade potential between Uganda and Zambia. “The combined value of trade between the two countries was USD 58.5 million in 2021, with the balance in favour of Zambia.” He expressed optimism that direct air services would boost trade, tourism, and business linkages.
“With improved air connectivity, we hope to support a vibrant travel market that facilitates better business, trade, and tourism linkages between Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe,” Kasaija said.
This expansion underscores Uganda Airlines’ commitment to improving regional cooperation, trade, and tourism.
The airline’s CEO, Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki, emphasized, “We’re thrilled to reconnect with Zambia and Zimbabwe, nations with deep historical and cultural ties to Uganda.”
