President Museveni Takes Decisive Action on Kiteezi Landfill Incident

Must Read

H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has taken decisive action in response to the Kiteezi landfill disaster. He has dismissed several top officials of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) due to evidence of criminal negligence. The dismissed officials include Mrs. Dorothy Kisaka, Executive Director; Engineer David Luyimbazi, Deputy Executive Director; and Dr. Daniel Okello, Director of Public Health.

The move comes after a report from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) highlighted severe oversight and negligence by these officials, which led to the tragic collapse of the landfill and resulted in the loss of over 21 lives. The President has also ordered further investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and other agencies to focus on criminal negligence.

To ensure a smooth transition, the President has directed the Public Service Commission to advertise the vacant positions and aims to appoint new officials within three months. The Minister for Kampala will advise on interim appointments to prevent disruptions in KCCA operations.

Key actions taken:

  • Dismissal of KCCA Officials: Mrs. Dorothy Kisaka, Engineer David Luyimbazi, and Dr. Daniel Okello
  • Further Investigation: CID and other agencies to focus on criminal negligence
  • Transition Plan: Public Service Commission to advertise vacant positions and Minister for Kampala to advise on interim appointments

President Museveni’s swift action demonstrates his commitment to upholding accountability and maintaining high governance standards. This move is also seen as a response to growing concerns about corruption and mismanagement within KCCA, with previous IGG reports ranking the authority as one of the most corrupt local governments in Uganda.
