The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new state-of-the-art headquarters, launching a transformative journey for the institution.
This project, set to significantly enhance the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and Veteran Affairs, symbolises Uganda’s enduring commitment to its defence forces and the welfare of its veterans.
The ceremony marked the commencement of a project that has been long overdue, aimed at addressing the challenges faced by veterans and providing them with the respect and support they have earned through years of dedicated service.
The new infrastructure will serve as a central hub for defence operations and will be equipped with modern facilities that reflect the stature of the Ministry and the UPDF.
Speaking at the event, the Under Secretary of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Mrs Edith Butuuro emphasised the importance of the project, noting its alignment with the government’s strategic priorities in infrastructure development.
“This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that our veterans, who have long faced challenges, receive the peace and support they rightfully deserve,” she remarked, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have brought the project to fruition.
The Ministry has secured substantial funding for the project, with UGX. 20 allocated, UGX. 10 billion of which was obtained in the last financial year, and the other UGX. 10 billion expected in the current financial year. This financial commitment highlights the government’s dedication to enhancing the standards of the UPDF and ensuring the project’s timely completion.
The construction work will be executed by UPDF engineers, whose expertise and professionalism will guarantee that the new facilities meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
The project, which is expected to be completed within three years, reflects the Ministry’s commitment to providing a dignified space for both active service members and veterans, fostering an environment where their welfare is prioritised.
The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in his address, lauded the groundbreaking as a critical milestone in the history of Uganda’s defense sector.
He noted that for decades, the Ministry had been housed in facilities that did not reflect the stature of the institution, but with the new headquarters, Uganda will now have a modern and impressive infrastructure that aligns with its national security aspirations.
“This new state-of-the-art headquarters will not only improve our operational efficiency but also stand as a symbol of strength and progress for our nation,” Gen. Kainerugaba stated.
The project’s success is also attributed to the leadership and strategic guidance provided by the top management committee of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs. Their approval of the project plan and dedication to ensuring value for money have been pivotal in advancing this initiative.
The Ministry has also established a receiving committee to oversee the procurement of materials, ensuring that every resource is utilised effectively and the construction remains on track.
This project, despite budgetary constraints, exemplifies the Ministry’s broader commitment to the welfare of both current service members and veterans, a commitment that will undoubtedly bring long-term benefits to Uganda’s defense capabilities.
The new headquarters is set to be a cornerstone of national security, illustrating the resilience and forward-thinking vision of Uganda’s Defense Forces.
